Frequently Asked Questions

How much do you charge?

We are a versatile jazz band and we offer a range of line ups.

For weddings and larger events, we are certainly at our best as the full 6 piece band. However, we do have many different line ups available to suit smaller spaces, more intimate events and lower budgets.

We price each event individually because there will be many factors which affect our fee; performance times, travel distance and also what equipment we need to provide.

If you would like a quote, please email us - jazzandthetonics@gmail.com. We will arrange a phone call to make sure we have all the details and from there, a quote will be with you very quickly - usually within a couple of hours!

What does your price include?

Our standard fees include 2 x 45-minute sets of live entertainment from Jazz & The Tonics, PA (sound system) for up to 100 guests, one special request, travel within 25 miles of our base in Surrey and our event liaison service through ELM Agency. This means that you don’t need to lift a finger; we will work out all of the logistics with your wedding venue or event planner.

What do you need?

As a band, we ask for a few simple things. A hot meal for each member, soft drinks for the duration of the event, a room where we can get changed and store our things, a safe performing area and convenient parking.

If any of these are an issue or cause problems, we can discuss and negotiate but most venues are very accommodating and it’s rarely an issue.

How much space do you need?

We usually ask for 6m x 6m for the 6, 5 or 4 piece band and 4m x 4m for the duo or trio. However, we love a larger stage and we are very used to squeezing into smaller spaces. So, if your venue is a little on the small side, we can chat about it and find a way to make it work!

Can you play in a venue with a sound limiter?

This is a very good question and YES we can! Depending on what type of sound limiter it is, and what level it is set at, we may have to adapt how the band play. For example, the drummer can use brushes/hot rods instead of drum sticks and it may be better to not include brass in the lineup if it’s a very sensitive sound limiter. We are very used to working with sound limiters though, so please don’t panic.

Do you learn requests?

We would love to learn your first dance or special request. It does need to be in keeping with our repertoire genres;- jazz, swing, pop. If you have something very different (opera, heavy rock etc) then we can play the original for you on our PA. Having said that, we have adapted many songs to put our own Jazz & the Tonics twist on them, so just ask, and we will do our very best. Examples of first dances we have previously adapted are:

Love Song - The Cure

Halo - Postmodern Jukebox

How Long Will I Love You - Ellie Goulding

You Send me - Same Cooke

Wonderful World - Sam Cooke

Foolish Things - Rod Stewart

Just The Way You Are - Billy Joel

And suggestions of hugely popular first dances are:

At Last - Etta James

Moon River - Andy Williams

L.O.V.E - Nat King Cole

The Way You Look Tonight - Frank Sinatra

You Send Me - Same Cooke

If you need any advice on choosing the first dance, please do ask.

Can I choose the setlist?

We would love you to tell us a few favourites from our setlist and of course, tell us if there are any songs you don’t like so much. We also want to know if you would like an easy listening background set, an upbeat dancing set or perhaps a mixture of both. We don’t let clients handpick every single song, because in our experience it doesn’t work so well on the night. As professionals with over a decade of experience, we judge the vibe and atmosphere of the event and often alter the set spontaneously, so we need some room to be able to do that

How long do you take to set up?

For the 6, 5 or 4 piece band, we ask for 2.5 hours to set up. We are often set up more quickly, but some venues have a more tricky load in and this allows for any unforeseen technical issues.

For the jazz duo or jazz trio, we can set up in 60 - 90 minutes.

Most of the set-up will be fairly quiet but we will need to make some noise for about 15  - 30 minutes to make sure that everything is working perfectly. If you have something like speeches going on at the same time as we are setting up, then we will make sure we set up either before or after. These are the finer details that we often iron out with the event planner. We also offer early arrivals if you would like everything set up before the event starts.
